25 Years of Freedom
A Limited Run of 250 Signature Editions Celebrating 25 Years of the Iconic Chair
For years, industrial designer Niels Diffrient observed a problem.
Despite the best of design intentions, people didn’t know how to operate their “ergonomic” office chairs.
Every “ergonomic” office chair was a labyrinth of buttons, levers and knobs.
In reality, people had to decode these complex controls in order to move easily and sit comfortably.
As it would turn out, less than 2% of people knew how to operate their office chairs, leaving them in static and unhealthy positions.
So Niels set to work to design the chair of the future: one that could adapt to the sitter, not the other way around.

Coincidentally, Bob King, founder of Humanscale, was on the hunt for an ergonomic task chair that people didn't need a manual to use.
Their paths crossed one day at Niels’ studio in Connecticut, where they sat down together for a conversation that would change the way people sit forever.

Niels showed Bob his many prototypes, demonstrating each new feature.
Each mock-up was rigorously tested to make sitting more natural and movement more effortless.
And in 1999, they launched Freedom with three major innovations...
The Original Freedom Family.
A revolutionary counterbalance — when your own bodyweight adjusts the recline tension, you get a chair perfectly tuned to you.
Effortless adjustment — armrests adapt in tandem, making a new position quick and easy.
Support while reclining — a headrest that moves with you, keeping you comfortable at any angle.
